The one obvious weakness to my setup was the very short strobe arm, which was demonstrated by hand holding the strobe. Of course they were able to sell me a much better solution. The men agreed and the California 100, the nickname given to the 100 Californian cavalrymen, traveled to Massachusetts to join the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. The California 100 was later joined by 3 more companies of Californians and formed what would be known as the California Battalion. The California Battalion spent the first year of their service in continual conflict with John Mosby’s guerilla battalion. In spite of the leave privileges, the movementof evacuees while they reside at the centers is necessarily somewhat restrictedand a certain feeling of isolation and confinement is almost inevitable. Inthe interest of both accuracy and fairness, it is important to distinguishsharply between the residents of relocation centers and the militaristsof Imperial Japan. Two-thirds of the people in the centers are Americancitizens, born in this country and educated, for the most part, in Americanpublic schools.

Afterward, they met at the home of Wilmer McLean where Lee agreed to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia. “There is nothing left for me to do but to go and see General Grant,” he told his staff that morning, “and I would rather die a thousand deaths.” Messengers, racing between the lines, carried communiques between the two camps, to halt the fighting and arrange a meeting. Generals Grant and Lee agreed to convene at the home of Wilmer McLean at Appomattox Court House to stop the fighting between their two armies. Rooney Lee’s men stayed with the infantry wheel while Rosser and Munford pressed forward (west) hoping to get on the Federal flank and gain the Stage Road in their rear. Meanwhile, General George Crook directed General Ranald McKenzie’s small division of cavalry from the Army of the James, and a brigade under Colonel Samuel B. Young, to move up to support Smith on the left.

Opportunities foreconomic gain in the ordinary sense are almost completely lacking to theresidents of the centers. On the morning of April 9, Lee ordered his cavalry, under the command of Gen. John B. Gordon, to attack Sheridan’s cavalry, which had blocked the Richmond-Lynchburg Stage Road. Lee commanded an army of nearly 27,000 soldiers, which paled in comparison to Grant’s force of some 63,000 troops, but he still intended to force his way through Union lines. However, Gordon saw thousands of Union troops quickly approaching and sent word to Lee that his position was hopeless unless the infantry supported them.

As the 5th Corps advanced, Custer and Brigadier General Thomas Devin’s divisions moved behind it—east on the LeGrand Road—putting additional pressure on the Confederate left flank as the Confederate infantry withdrew through the village. After a white flag had appeared on Custer’s front, General Martin Gary’s cavalry brigade disavowed the truce and attacks Custer’s advance, but the attack was quickly beaten back, suffering losses. Gordon formed his lines at the western edge of the village with the divisions of General Clement Evans on the left, General James Walker in the center, General Bryan Grimes on the right and General William Wallace’s division was in a second line.

Fearful of a secessionist revolt, the federal government built Camp Drum in San Pedro in 1861 (now the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum) to maintain order.

No such provisions were made for Lee’s army, and “the countryside became infested with gangs of pillaging veterans” (8). Two weeks later, everyone felt a great sense of relief at reports that John Wilkes Booth had been captured and killed…. On that same day, April 26, Confederate Gen. Joseph Johnston surrendered his Army of the Tennessee – the largest Confederate force still in existence – to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in Durham Station, North Carolina. Johnston also surrendered other forces under his command in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida – altogether surrendering more than 89,000 soldiers. Including the reconstructed court house, there are about 10 buildings (extant or reconstructed) that were in the village at the time of the surrender and are an integral part of the park.

Early on April 9, 1865 the remnants of John Brown Gordon’s corps and Fitzhugh Lee’s cavalry formed a line of battle at Appomattox Court House. Gen. Robert E. Lee was determined to make one final attempt to reach his supplies at Lynchburg and escape Ulysses S. Grant’s ever-tightening noose. After a brief engagement a Confederate horseman was seen galloping toward Union lines holding aloft a white flag.

Faced with no route of escape to Lynchburg, Lee agreed to negotiate terms of surrender. Atthe time of evacuation, many of the evacuees disposed of their properties,especially their household goods, in quick sales that frequently involvedheavy financial losses. We also focused our conceptual design of the aircraft based on the scoring analysis, which led us to decide a particular mission to focus our design upon. Along with the design, we made plans for prototyping/manufacturing and testing, which we are conducting in the current quarter, Winter 2022. The competition consisted of missions involving short take-off and landing, stealth missions, and strike missions. DBF gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of disciplines within aeronautics and apply what they learn in classes in a setting similar to that of industry. The packages were also equipped with shock sensors that nullifies the score of a deployed package if tripped. Unfazed by the challenges and adversity, the team managed to successfully deploy 6 packages, the third most of 97 teams, and scored the highest finish of 9th, marking the return to competitiveness. During the fall quarter, 2021, we finished our preliminary design of our aircraft including the fuselage, wings, tails, and landing gears.

THE FIREFLY

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Design Build Fly (AIAA DBF) competition is an annual aircraft design competition. Each year students are tasked with designing, building, and flying unmanned, electric powered, remote control aircraft. These aircraft are required to meet unique and very specific design requirements and mission profiles. Each year the missions change forcing teams to come up with completely new aircraft year after year. Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned, electric powered, radio controlled aircraft which can best meet the specified mission profile. The goal is a balanced design possessing good demonstrated flight handling qualities and practical and affordable manufacturing requirements while providing a high vehicle performance.

Teams were assigned payload manifests at random and scoring was based on performance during these runs. The UW successfully design, built, and flew “The Growler”, a unique bi-plane configuration with high speed and payload capacity. The aircraft must complete three laps within a 5 minute flight window for this mission. In order to minimize the number of sub-assemblies of the Production Aircraft (Tony), which adversely affects theRAC, a single sub-assembly design was chosen and built.

This year’s competition involved designing an aircraft to accommodate a random assortment of payloads. While the UW was able to construct and submit a final report for “Da Dawgsled”, technical issues prevented any competition flights of the aircraft, dramatically impacting the final score. The airplane had to fit in a commercially available suitcase meeting airline carry-on requirements.

Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned, electric powered, radio-controlled aircraft which can best meet the specified mission profile. Began with high expectations after 2022, this year required a highly efficient plane that could fly the heaviest payload for the most laps, while also holding the largest weight via the wingtips during ground mission. While this year saw all on-campus activities return to normal, manufacturing had to be rebuilt from the ground up in order to facilitate the high strength carbon sandwich construction necessary for the aircraft’s design. While competition was not controversy-free, the team ultimately came through, scoring a record 5th place out of 99 teams. This year’s flight objective was to design, build, and test a remotely operated radio control airplane for Urban Air Mobility.

Flying RC can be very technical and sometimes it’s nice to eliminate guess work by having an airplane that is just ready to go. The disadvantage to these ready to fly aircraft is that they can be difficult to repair after a major crash.

In order to minimize the number of speed controllers used on the aircraft, which adversely affects theRated Aircraft Cost (RAC), a single-motor configuration was chosen. To minimize the number of servosneeded and reduce the complexity of the control system, the aircraft's only control surfaces are rudderand elevator. The wing has substantial polyhedral to aid controllability and eliminate the need for rollcontrol.

Fromthe initial concept rendering, Design Build Fly has been envisioned as anexhibit built with and among a large number of authentic airplanesections. This required extensivecoordination between suppliers, EP and Roto, from early design through allstages of engineering and fabrication.
